Multicultural Education and Technology
One of my expectations as an educator is to introduce a passion for learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a caring, secure, and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and mature. It is my desire as an educator to make sure that students meet their fullest potential. I will teach to the needs of each child so that all learners can feel skilled and successful. I feel there is a need for care, strength, and devotion to individuals who are delighted about working with children. I will present curriculum that involves the interests of the children and makes learning relevant to life. I will incorporate themes, integrated units, projects, cooperative learning, individual work, and hands-on learning in order to make children energetic learners. In my opinion, teaching provides an opportunity for steady learning and growth. Teaching is a lifelong learning process of knowledge about new beliefs and new strategies, learning from the parents and community, learning from colleagues, and especially learning from the children. Children have taught me to open my mind and my heart to the joys, the innocence, and the diversity of ideas in the world. I will make it my goal to provide a classroom that is enjoyable and interesting to learn in. As a teacher I will strive to fulfill the student’s expectation brought with them to my classroom. Multicultural education is such a huge part of today in your classrooms and schools. “In recent years multicultural education and technology have emerged as key issues in teaching and teacher education. But whether they represent pedagogy's perfect pair or its odd couple is still being determined as teachers at all levels seek ways to integrate the two.” (Multicultural Education and Technology) Multicultural education is everywhere. In our local schools there is not just one race, everyone you see has a different background. Different cultural, races, religions and languages are there. Culture is a shared beliefs, symbols and interruptions with a human group. You do not have to have an accent to have culture. You do not have to have darker skin to have culture. Everyone everywhere has culture. All the factors i.e. race/ethnicity, gender, religion, social class, etc., play into students behavior. This is easier to grasp the concept of many different elements playing into a student’s behavior, not just the color of their skin. Observing in schools I have seen this first hand. Trying to integrate as many activities dealing with different cultures is important for students. Some students will come into a classroom only knowing their cultural. To help schools further their knowledge of Multicultural Education, they are expanding their resources. Today it is hard not to find a classroom without a computer or internet access. Somewhere in the school will be a computer lab with access to many computer and internet resources. Nowadays universities and college campuses have online classes to offer as well. “Many colleges have been expanding their curriculums over the last decade to include online classes and web conferences have played a significant role. A feature that only requires an Internet connection to access; a web conference allows instructors to interact with their students by lecture, discussion or question and answer. Whiteboards can be employed through web conferencing, as can slideshows, allowing the instructor to demonstrate examples or share graphics that illustrate their point. While many online classes also utilize web pages, message boards and emails, the web conference allows for a lecture period and if a student is ‘absent,’ they can replay the lesson.” (Simpson) Online classes have their advantages and disadvantages like all classes do, to me it is a personal preference. “Mission and scale both influence the technological needs of liberal arts campuses. Strong teaching missions and high-touch cultures demand that technology enhance and extend face-to-face interaction, reinforcing close relationships between faculty, staff, and students. In terms of curriculum, integration is key: faculty members across the board must have support in helping students utilize technology effectively.” (National Institute for Technology)
